The tailings of electro-static/micro-wave beam impulses passing through the cloud cover from above. these beams can be used as "carrier waves" just like "radio waves" to pick up data from below the cloud cover and return. The beam bounces off the target and brings up data on terra forms as well as captures virtually all media signals in a massive broad band of power array. Clifford Carnicom goes extensively into the physical sciences behind all of this here: Aerosol Crimes. Contrails disappear inside a minute most often and rarely much more. These stick around for hours and spread into huge banks of "clouds" which is most noticed by folks that have a lot of time on their hands. It's amazing what kind of things you can discern merely by watching the sky intently over a large span of time.
