By definition "smug" is an attitude. An expression or feeling of contempt, even revulsion, that substitutes for the "meme" of "invulnerability" we are born with. As we grow, our sense of "invulnerability" becomes modified by experience.
We all eventually learn we are neither invulnernable, invaluable or invincible. In other words we mature. Once the "meme" of invulnerability is rendered "inoperative' by expereince, we seek to refill our hyper-inflated 'self-esteem-iron" with more and more "stuff"!
As we age we replace our "personal invulnerability" with new "memetic" actualizers such as "economic invulnerability" (my daddy is rich, therefore, I am) or even "religious invulnerability" (onward right wing Christian soldiers)
I'd like to say that "smug" is an attitude of inviolable personal security based on ignorance of fact...and that's what "Al Qaeda's" of the world are targetting. Oh, I was pretty smug as I walked into that Amtrak Train Station in Berkeley.
I sat reading the "Wall Street Journal" with a comfortable bank account, comfortable shoes and utter peace of mind that "our government" had it all under control. I sat in my "smug-meme-state" for nearly an hour...until it was broken by a young angry black male, pointing an automatic .45 at my head.
He screamed..."allah says I must kill you all"...he fired and reloaded 3 times...22 rounds...and "missed". Well, he missed us..but he killed the handsome young man he walked in with. He also missed all the 11 "smug-ees" in suits, as well.
It's time we traded our "security" and "peace of mind" memes for reality. Because in the end, our "peace of mind" is only "temporary" unless we deal with the threats before us. I'm not going to say..'we need only fear, fear itself'...but what I am going to say is...'we need not only love, money itself as a foreign policy'.
What brought this "meme" to mind was the stunning realization that Bush..just may be doing something right. I'm stunned that I wasn't aware of just how pervasive the "super cells of Hamas" were in this nation. Smug means, never having to say you love anything.
